Video games have a large amount of elements that could be highlighted for the Easter period. There’s cute little bunnies and chickens almost everywhere, several games involving chocolate in some way, and altogether too many games about Jesus. But what I wanted to look at today was the eggs in video games because not only are there more than you would think, but they appear in so many guises and genres.
So, here we go, my top eggs in video games!
The Wind Fish (The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening)
One of the most imposing sights in the Zelda series, the giant egg of the Wind Fish sits high above everything else on Koholint Island, and features heavily in artwork of the game. Within the egg rests the Wind Fish, a god-like creature and the whole story revolves around waking said creature up. I won’t ruin the story as it is one of the best in the whole series, but standing before it is one of the most breathtaking sights in video games.

Exeggcute (Pokémon series)
In a series that sees the player taking on creatures that are essentially gods or primordial beings, the best thing to have on your side is what are essentially half a dozen sentient eggs, right? The Pokémon series is full of egg-based abominations, from Chansey to Togepi, but I had to give the edge to this pathetic group simply based on its evolution. Exeggutor is fucking hilarious in both standard and Alolan forms, and I won’t be backing down on this.
Bunny Day (Animal Crossing: New Horizons)
Shake a tree, is that a piece of sumptuous fruit falling? No, it’s an egg. Dig a little hole, is that a fossil buried to discover? No, it’s an egg. Cast your fishing rod out, is that a feisty fish pulling on the line? No, it’s an egg. Chop down a tree, is it made out of wood? No, it’s an egg. Shoot down an errant balloon flying overhead, it is a welcome present? NO, IT’S A FUCKING EGG.
Baby Dragon Eggs (Spyro 2: Gateway to Glimmer / Ripto’s Rage!)
Nothing ruins an attempt at a vacation quite like being pulled in an alternate dimension in which your species is under threat of being wiped out entirely. This being said, you can help by running around and rescuing the eggs of baby dragons to save the dragons of Avalar. Finding them treats you to an adorable little skit of the dragon hatching complete with their names and, I’ll be honest, this is one of the most heartwarming things gaming has to offer.

Doctor Eggman (Sonic the Hedgehog series)
What sort of list about eggs in video games would be complete without everyone’s favourite antagonist, and one with scores of rabbit robots and robot pigs that throw eggs at their disposal? He isn’t strictly an egg, unlike several of the entries on this list, but the clue is in the name with this one. Although, as this name is based entirely on Sonic being cruel about the Doctor’s appearance, he has my sympathies.
The Chosen Undead (Dark Souls)
I could have gone with several things from Dark Souls with a list of eggs in video games, with the crawling things from Quelaag’s Domain coming to mind as particular highlights, if you want to call them that. You might have missed it, as it was an optional part of the game, but you can curl up into a ball in a nest of a disturbingly giant crow and be carried back to the Undead Asylum, and for that brief moment you WERE an egg.
So that’s my personal best eggs in video games – which is a phrase I didn’t expect to say – or some of them at least. Do you have any eggs you love in video games, let me know in the comments or on Twitter!
