RTG | Best Games of the Decade

Editorials

The decade of 2010-2019 is finally over, and we head into the ‘20s with some of the defining years of modern gaming behind us. Some of the games that have blessed (or cursed) us in the last ten years will likely be remembered as some of the best games of all time, with many of the games released in earlier years seeing various fantastic sequels in the decade too.

But, which are the best? I’ve argued with myself a lot over the most appropriate way of doing this list and I eventually landed on this, my year-by-year best game from 2010 all the way up to 2019. I’ll put a couple of honourable mentions in each year, but there can be only one actual. Ready? I’m not.

I love traditional JRPGs, and I mean I love them a lot, so it was unlikely that I was going to go into Octopath Traveler with an overly open mind. But after playing through the incredible action-JRPG, Ys VIII, I needed something a little more comforting, but was the game the big thick, number-heavy cosy blanket I needed in my life?

It’s that time again, we’re on New Year’s Eve and so it’s the perfect time to look back over the year and it has been an incredible year for gaming. I’ve not even played some of the bigger titles this year, owing to becoming editor for Rice Digital, and this was still a really hard list to nail down. Also, I tried to keep it restricted in terms of genre, otherwise I would have had just a list of fighting games and JRPGs. Enough of that though, let’s just crack on!

Anyone who knows me will know that I am rather a large fan of the JRPG genre, in fact, I normally will drop pretty much any other game I happen to be playing to pick one up. Furthermore, in that genre, I consider Bravely Default to be one of the best. So when I found out that some of the guys behind Bravely were making a new JRPG, I was all for it. Enter, Octopath Traveler.
